How to Choose Good Matcha: 4 Things to Check Instead of the Grade Word

The short answer

There's no shortcut word that reliably tells you whether a matcha is good — as we lay out in our grade decoder, "ceremonial," "premium" and "culinary" are all vendor-invented, with no Japanese government or trade-body standard behind any of them. What actually is checkable is a short list: region, cultivar, harvest flush, and price per gram. This page bundles those four into one buying checklist, with links to the full detail on each.

1. Region

A named growing region — Uji, Nishio, Yame, Shizuoka and others — is a specific, checkable claim; "Japan" alone is not. Region also hints at growing method: Uji-area tea, for example, is historically associated with oishita (shaded) cultivation, the basis for tencha and gyokuro. 2. Cultivar

If a vendor states a cultivar — Yabukita, Samidori, Okumidori, Gokou and others — that's a fact about the actual plant the tea came from, unlike a grade word. Because Yabukita is the nationwide default (see our Yabukita guide), a vendor naming something else is usually flagging a more specific style or growing purpose.

3. Harvest flush

First-flush (ichibancha) leaf, picked in spring, is a real, checkable agricultural fact — not a marketing tier — and generally commands the highest prices of the year (see our 2026 matcha supply report for how first-flush pricing has moved recently). Later flushes and cooking-oriented lots are typically cheaper and coarser, a legitimate, fit-for-purpose choice rather than a lesser one.

4. Price per gram

Convert every listing to price per gram before comparing tins of different sizes — our verified vendor-by-vendor comparison found prices from $0.93 to $2.57 per gram even within one vendor's own 30g lineup, which tracked cultivar and harvest, not tin size.

None of these four signals is a shortcut — reading all four together is the point.
